First City University College (First City UC) students’ engineering and computing projects were proudly showcased during the institution’s fifth Innovation Day. These students, the latest graduating batch from the Faculty of Engineering and Computing displayed their final year projects as the university college celebrates the power of innovation by these young inventors and engineers.

 

The event showcased a total of 54 projects from the field of BEng (Hons) Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and BSc (Hons) Software Engineering and selected projects from the Foundation in Engineering, Science and Technology, Diploma in Information Technology, and Diploma in Electronic Engineering.

 

The annual Innovation Day, which was started in 2012, has been traditionally recognised and looked forward to every year; serving as a platform for the students to connect with the industry, as potential employers and partners who have a longstanding relationship with the institution are also invited to the event. Professor Dr Ho Chee Cheong, Vice-Chancellor of the University College highlighted that the event had brought the University College closer to the industry which is in keeping with the objectives of the University College. “Establishing a strong linkage with the industry is an essential part of our university’s objectives. This is the way to get our students familiar with how the industry works and enhance their employability,” he said.

Some of the highlights of the projects were Intelligence Decision Support System for Depressed Individual, Right-Brain Development Tool for Toddlers, Squarefeet - A Property Web Service, Travities - A Web Service for Travellers, Autonomous Granting Visitation Permission Using Android-based Smartphone Entering Offices in a Building, Home Automated Water Management System via Internet of Thing Features, and Optical Path Length Optimization for Ozone Concentration Measurement in the Ultraviolet Spectrum.

The first and second best projects in Engineering and Computing categories were awarded RM600 and RM400 each respectively. The winners were chosen through 70% professional assessment and 30% voting process, which was carried out through a mobile application (on both iOS and Android) developed and sponsored by First City UC’s alumni.

 

Low Wai Kit, from the BSc (Hons) in Software Engineering degree programme garnered the first prize in the Computing category for his project entitled, Right-Brain Development Tool for Toddlers while Elaine Kong Yie Ling, another student from the same programme claimed  the second prize for her project entitled, Intelligent Decision Support System for Depressed Individual.

 

In the Engineering category, the first prize went to Cavan Sim Kah Lung, from the BEng (Hons) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering degree programme. Autonomous Granting Visitation Permission Using Android-based Smartphone Entering Offices in a Building. Poon Wei Soon won the second prize in the Engineering category with her project entitled, Greenhouse Monitoring and Control System with loT Connectivity and Fuzzy Logic.

 

Guest speaker, Mr. Marshal Yung, the founder of Gaia Technologies Sdn. Bhd., spoke on the topic of “Innovate with Internet of Things (IoT)”. Gaia Technologies is an internet company which has built and marketed seven of their own venture projects of different industry segments. Mr. Yung is responsible for the company’s product engineering and strategic directions and is currently a technology advisor to two other software companies building enterprise applications and learning management system.
