FIRST CITY UC CELEBRATED STUDENTS’ FINAL-YEAR PROJECTS AT ITS SIXTH INNOVATION DAY

As the world swiftly moves into the digital technology era in recent decades, First City University College continues to celebrate the power of innovation in its aspiring young engineers, programmers and IT specialists by hosting the annual Innovation Day for the sixth time this year. The event, organised recently by the Faculty of Engineering and Computing showcased its students’ most innovative projects and provided them with the opportunity to demonstrate their creativity and skills to prospective employers and industry players in attendance.

A total of 50 projects were put on display, which include the final-year works of students who studied BEng (Hons) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and BSc (Hons) Software Engineering programmes as well as selected projects by Diploma in Information Technology and Diploma in Mechatronics students. First City UC’s Innovation Day is looked forward to every year since it was first held in 2012; it serves as a platform for the students to connect with industry and get employed, as the event often attracts potential employers and partners who have a longstanding relationship with First City UC. Its engineering and computing graduates are highly sought-after; students received offers of employment

50 projects by Engineering and Computing students were showcased at First City UC’s 6th Innovation Day.

Highlights of this year’s students’ projects were Augmented Farming Eco-system Controller, 3 Pillars of Hope: Interactive Game for Depressed Individuals, Augmented Reality App using Fiducial Marker, Pre-Historic Stereoscopic Museum Information System and Automatic License Plate Recognition for Parking Management. The students came up with the idea for these impressive projects themselves which are very relevant to the current market demand and have spent up to 6 months working alongside their attentive supervisors and lecturers.

Best projects in the exhibition were awarded cash prizes in a move by the faculty to boost motivation and provide encouragement to the students to continue producing and creating more innovative. Winners were chosen through 70% professional assessment and 30% voting process, which was carried out through an online survey developed by a BSc (Hons) Software Engineering, Year 2 student.

Winners of best projects received special cash rewards by First City UC in its bid to boost students’ motivation and encourage them to continue producing innovative works.

During the event, students were enlightened by a talk session presented by Ms. Maria Rajen from Creative Dreams International Sdn. Bhd. who spoke on the topic of “Technopreneurship”. They learnt how their technology and digital knowledge acquired in university can be harnessed with entrepreneurial skills to create a rewarding and successful career when they graduate.

First City UC constantly work with collaborative partners such as IBM Malaysia and Google Malaysia to enhance its students’ learning experience by exposing them to the digital industry, while designing specially-crafted courses to equip students with necessary skills relevant to the industry for immediate employment. In line with this, the Faculty of Engineering and Computing is rolling out its own homegrown programmes, offering Bachelor’s Degrees in Electronic Engineering, Computer Science (Intelligent Systems) and Information Systems in Business Management which are now accepting registrations for the next intake in September 2017. In the near future, as the faculty continues innovating itself to keep up with industry’s demands, there will be more new programmes for students who wish to pursue careers in Information Technology field, in particular, Mobile Computing, Networking and Security.
