Warm-up Project for FDBE Orientation – 9BU Roundabout Competition
As part of the orientation activities for the new students of the Faculty of Design and Built Environment for the February 2022 intake, a warm-up project in the form of a competition was held from 8 to 10 February 2022.
The 9BU Roundabout Competition was held as a companion competition to the main competition organised by Bandar Utama City Centre Sdn. Bhd. (BUCC). The competition organised by BUCC invites the public to showcase their ideas to design a roundabout leading to the 9BU and 8BU Condominiums. Entries for the competition should reflect the theme, Green and Environmentally Friendly and should reflect Country Club Living within a Golf Resort in the midst of a thriving Urban Township.
The Faculty of Design and Built Environment adopted the concept, theme and criteria of the BUCC Competition for their companion competition. The participants for the competition consisted of 130 current and new students from various design specialisations, namely interior architecture and design, furniture and product design as well as graphic design.
Under the guidance of tutors consisting of FDBE’s programme coordinators and academic staff members, students were divided into 10 teams led by a team leader. They were required to produce presentation proposals in groups and initial ideas which could lead to the final design proposal individually. The ideas and concepts for the design of the roundabout should reflect the site and community. They also had to fulfil the criteria of the competition by emphasising the green landscape and nature, sustainable and practical material application and low maintenance and carbon footprint.

The students submitted their proposals and initial ideas to their tutors on 10 February 2022 and all the students gathered for the announcement of the winners of the competition. Awards were presented to two of the best teams and the student with the best initial idea. The competition was an excellent learning experience for the design students as they learned how to recognise site context and issues and propose an overall design concept and solution. The competition was also a useful platform for the students to display their leadership skills and adapt to working in a team. The students’ individual ideas will eventually be submitted to BUCC for the actual competition.
