ENHANCING STUDENTS’ LEARNING JOURNEY THROUGH OUT-OF-CLASS EXPERIENCE

In the competitive job market when there are increasing retrenchments and scarcity of good jobs, graduates must be able to stand out to get noticed by employers, as most are now looking beyond academic achievements. Studies have shown that the soft skills employers often look for in a candidate and crucial to catapult one’s career include communication, organisation, ability to work in a team, and critical thinking amongst others. First City University College recognises the importance of honing these skills, therefore has made continuous effort to open up opportunities for its students to benefit from out-of-class learning by organising study trips, events and seminars which require students’ active participation.

A recent art and design educational trip was organised by First City UC’s Faculty of Design & Built Environment involving staff and students from its Graphic Design programme to participate in the New Silk Road 2017 Workshop in Beijing, China. Four higher education institutions from three countries – Gengdan Institute of Technology Beijing, Central Academy of Fine Arts Beijing (CAFA), ESA Saint-Luc Bruxelles, Belgium and First City UC – collaborated on projects, workshops and forums which revolved around 9 different themes and areas. During the trip, students from the institutions discussed and exchanged ideas, experiment and collaborate to work on projects based on the set themes under the guidance of tutors. The final collaborative students’ projects were exhibited at the end of the workshop, and eventually will be compiled into a book to be published later. Apart from working on the projects, the staff and students were brought on guided tours to visit teaching and learning facilities in the department of design in Gengdan campus and attended a forum organised by CAFA, which is the number one art and design school in China.

First City UC students work alongside their fellow peers from 3 other universities on collaborative projects during their Beijing trip.

Meanwhile at First City UC campus, students of the Diploma in Hospitality & Tourism Management and Diploma in Mass Communication jointly organised the City Thrills Festival. The project provided an opportunity to sharpen their skills in communication, organisation and teamwork – skills crucial to help them realise their dream jobs. Several food and beverages stalls were put up by the students selling drinks, light snacks and meals they cooked themselves to put into practice skills they learnt on entrepreneurship and marketing. It was a brisk business attracting fellow students and visitors who played games to win prizes while being treated to organised musical and dance performance by the students and special guests.

The City Thrills Festival promotes teamwork and sharpens students’ skills in communication, collaboration and organisation.

Producing highly qualified and employable graduates who can secure employment immediately upon graduation is crucial to First City UC’s success in fulfilling its mission to be the leading higher education provider in Malaysia. It is with this goal in mind that the institution continues to provide quality education in the best teaching and learning environment, more so with the completion of its campus expansion. The new facilities include more lecture rooms, studios, IT centre, library, MBA Centre, on-campus accommodation and indoor recreational facilities to provide students with a conducive environment for an enriched and wholesome student experience. As it works with reputable UK universities in offering dual award programmes, First City UC continuously rolls out its own homegrown programmes which are specially-crafted with relevant modules and incorporate the teaching of skills much required to fill in the demands of the industry.
