EXPLORING CULTURAL AND VISUAL NARRATIVES – A DESIGN FIELD TRIP IN KUALA LUMPUR

On 23rd January 2025, students from the Foundation in Art & Design and BA (Honours) in Graphic Design explored Kuala Lumpur’s cultural and artistic spaces. This immersive field trip let them experience design beyond the classroom, uncovering stories behind Malaysia’s rich visual heritage.

The adventure began at Kwai Chai Hong, where the Bountiful Blessings installation mesmerised students with bold colours and symbolism. They explored the Central Market, Merdeka Square, the Sultan Abdul Samad Building, and the River of Life. The final stop at GMBB enabled them to engage with contemporary art and meet local artisans, gaining firsthand insights into the creative process.

The trip helped students bridge the gap between theory and practice. Many found it beneficial in deepening research skills, engaging with lecturers, and receiving immediate feedback.

The hands-on exposure sparked fresh ideas and a deeper appreciation for visual storytelling, reinforcing the significance of cultural narratives in the Foundation in Art & Design and BA (Honours) in Graphic Design programmes.
