‘A CASE FOR TYPE’ DESIGN CONFERENCE

FIRST CITY UC HOSTED ‘A CASE FOR TYPE’ DESIGN CONFERENCE

PETALING JAYA, 4th March 2016 – First City University College or First City UC hosted a design conference today, organised by the Department of Design, Faculty of Design and Built Environment.

The conference, titled “A Case for Type” which took place from 10am until 4.30pm, was attended by experienced and respected speakers from the design industry such as Prof. Phil Cleaver from School of Art & Design, Middlesex University, London, Mr. William Harald-Wong from William Harald-Wong & Associates and Mr. Ee Soon Wei, the managing director of TRP Heritage, which oversees The Royal Press, one of the oldest letterpress printing house in the world.

Mr. Harald-Wong, an urban identity designer, commenced the conference in the morning with a talk titled “Meet Mr. Font, the neglected and abused child with a lot of stories to tell”, imparting knowledge on his wide experience working with type in the context of brand, culture and design.

This was followed by Mr. Ee’s session titled “Press On” before the lunch break. Subsequently, Prof. Phil Cleaver spoke about “A lifetime in Type” based on his experience as an author, artist and graphic designer.

Dr. Debbie Gan, Deputy Head of the Faculty said, “We are very honoured to host this conference, and welcome these special speakers who are very passionate in their fields to enlighten our students and designers. We hope they can learn from these experienced creative practitioners and inspire them to nurture their own talents”.

Apart from the speakers’ sessions, there were also pop-up booths by participating vendors such as Basheer Graphic Books, The Royal Press, CUTOUT, Obsolete and Co.,and First City UC’s Creative Stove, a store specializing in students’ craft and design. In conjunction with the conference, TYPOKAKI – a type design collective – also exhibited their work from 1-6 March at First City UC’s White Canvas Gallery.
