Cracking the Case: Students Put Critical Thinking and English Skills to the Test

On 25 and 26 May 2026, students stepped into the role of detectives during Making Inferences: Solve the Mystery, an interactive workshop organised by the Centre for Language and Extension Service. Using witness statements, clues, timelines, and evidence from a fictional murder case, students worked individually and in teams to identify suspects and justify their conclusions.

The activity challenged students to distinguish facts from assumptions, evaluate evidence, and apply inferencing skills to solve the case. Through discussion, collaboration, and problem-solving, students strengthened their critical reading, analytical thinking, and communication abilities while using English in a meaningful and engaging way.

By transforming a language lesson into a mystery-solving experience, the workshop demonstrated that learning English can be both enjoyable and practical, helping students build confidence while developing valuable skills for academic and professional success.
