Malaysia Design Archive Visit Deepens Students’ Understanding of Design and Cultural Identity

Students from the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Graphic Design visited the Malaysia Design Archive on 8 April 2026 as part of the Visual Culture and Self-Initiated Research modules.

Through an engaging talk and exploration of archival materials, students gained insights into Malaysia’s visual culture and how design reflects social, political, and cultural contexts. The session encouraged critical thinking beyond aesthetics, highlighting design as a tool for storytelling and identity.

Students found the experience inspiring. Ng Ji Fung shared that the visit deepened his appreciation for local design heritage and inspired him to incorporate cultural identity into future work. Winnie Gwee Shi Nee added that historical designs showed how the past continues to influence contemporary design.

The visit strengthened students’ critical thinking and creative perspective, supporting their development as thoughtful and culturally aware designers.
