Petty Debate Workshop Strengthens Students’ Argumentation and Communication Skill

The Centre for Language and Extension Service organised the “Petty Debate: Building Arguments Through Playful Discourse” workshop on 14 and 15 April 2026 for Diploma and Degree students enrolled in English and Communication Writing Skills courses.

Through light-hearted debate topics, students practised presenting viewpoints, responding to opposing arguments, and supporting their ideas with clear reasoning. The activity emphasised logical thinking, structured argumentation, and the effective use of language in real-time discussions.

Students found the session engaging. Lim Jia Xing from the Diploma in Interior Design shared that the activity helped him practise arguing logically, while Darius Thong from the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Interior Architecture and Design noted that it improved his ability to think quickly and structure arguments effectively.

The workshop strengthened students’ confidence and critical thinking, supporting the development of articulate and industry-ready graduates.
