SHOWCASE OF STUDENTS’ DESIGN PORTFOLIOS
First City University College recently hosted the second edition of its bi-annual Diploma Graduate Showcase, displaying the portfolios of its final year design students at the campus’ Multi-Purpose Hall in Bandar Utama, Petaling Jaya. It was well attended by prospective employers in the interactive and interior design industry.
The 3-day event showcased 10 students’ accumulative artworks throughout their study period from Diploma of Interactive Design and 37 final year project presentations by students of Diploma in Interior Design. For the Interactive Design students, the organisation of the showcase event itself will contribute a fair amount to their final score for the semester, which include coming up with the concept and identity design, event organization, marketing, promotion and sponsorship. As for the Interior Design students, their Final Year Projects on display throughout the showcase were assessed by an external examiner.
The theme of the showcase was “Emouvoir”, which is a French word meaning “to touch or move someone emotionally in a good way”. The name was chosen as this exhibition of students’ work is meant to inspire and touch people.
“This is a day that we have all been waiting for ever since we commenced our studies at First City UC two and a half years ago. This is where we have learnt so much – not only academically but socially and intellectually. It has helped shape the person that we are today. This Showcase will mark a new beginning in one of the most important chapters of our lives,” said Chen Lian Lian, president of the Showcase’s organising committee.
Ms. Yeong Yin Cheng, First City UC’s Chief Operating Officer, who officiated the launch said, “We are very proud of our students, as they have tirelessly worked on this Showcase organisation themselves since May, taking ownership of this exhibition through the formation of the organising committee and putting their heart and soul into making this Showcase a success. To this batch of 47 students who are participating today, the Showcase signifies an important milestone in their academic journey at First City UC, and therefore, would be a sentimental event for them. These young designers have spent 2 years and more working on their projects, which were selected to be displayed today based on their individual strength and specialty.”
First City UC students have a high employability rate and much sought-after by the industry players. These exhibitions serve as a platform for potential employers to headhunt its outstanding graduates.
Apart from the above Diploma programmes, the Faculty of Design & Built Environment also offers bachelor’s degree programmes in Interior Architecture & Design, Graphic Design and Furniture & Product Design in collaboration with Nottingham Trent University, UK in addition to Foundation in Art & Design.
