FIRST CITY UC STUDENTS CELEBRATE HOW THEY ARE MADE DIFFERENT

The Graphic Design and Interior Architecture & Design students of First City University College (First City UC) proudly showcased their amazing and inspirational final year projects to the public and industry experts during Sequence 16, held from 24 – 26 June 2016. The event held at the Highstreet of One Utama Shopping Centre celebrates the unique talents and individuality of the young designers who are on their way to becoming prominent figures in the design industry.

A total of 80 projects were showcased during the event which featured some of the students’ finest work from the BA (Hons) Graphic Design and BA (Hons) Interior Architecture and Design programmes. “The theme of this year’s Sequence ‘Made Different’ celebrates the young graduates’ individuality and uniqueness through their creative journeys during their years at First City UC,” said Tan Sri Dato (Dr) Teo Chiang Liang, the President of First City UC.

The theme also highlights self-discovery and how students have developed personal views and styles. “The knowledge and expertise the students have gathered at First City University College have certainly given them the confidence to develop as unique and individual design professionals. They are now well-prepared for any challenge they face in the industry,” he added.

The event was made more meaningful by the presence of Ms Melisa Wong, President of the Graphic Design Association of Malaysia. She congratulated the students on their success and shared tips on how to succeed in a rapidly evolving and challenging world of graphic design.

Entering its 11th year, Sequence has always been a highly anticipated event. It serves as a platform for potential employers to head-hunt award-winning students of First City UC. “The annual exhibition encourages our students to be confident and capable designers who in many instances are employed on the spot by industry leaders,” said First City University College Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr Ho Chee Cheong.

Tan Kok Yan, a student from the BA Graphic Design programme completed her foundation studies in Art and Design at First City UC prior to enrolling in the degree programme. “My 4 years at First City UC have truly been an enriching experience. As I enter into a new phase in my life, I shall always cherish the memories and value the knowledge I have gained as a student here.” She expressed her appreciation to the lecturers who are dedicated in shaping and guiding the students to be professional designers. “The guidance and lessons I have gained from the lecturers at First City UC have taught me to be better in everything I do and to always improve and strive to be the best,” she added.

Keeon Leong, president of Sequence 16, together with the students gained new experience in managing the event. “It has indeed been an arduous undertaking for all of us, but I am proud to say that all of us are filled with a true sense of accomplishment, having created a spectacular exhibition from a mere empty space. I wish to congratulate everyone for a job well done,” he said. Another highlight of the event is the inclusion of a photo booth for graduates and attendees to commemorate their presence at the event. “This idea could not have come at a more opportune time as this is the first year Sequence is held following the elevation of the institution to university college status,” he added.

The design students of First City UC have always made headlines for winning numerous awards and competitions including the Pink Lady Apples Contest, the iPrint Malaysia Print Award and the MIID Student Saturdays Competition. A total of six graduates will be awarded the First Class Honours degree in the upcoming graduation ceremony. The Graphic Design and Interior Architecture & Design degree programmes are conducted at First City University College in collaboration with Nottingham Trent University – a leading UK university with more than 150 years of experience in design education.
