FIRST CITY CELEBRATES STUDENTS’ STELLAR ACADEMIC & EXTRACURRICULAR ACHIEVEMENTS

First City University College honoured the recent academic and extracurricular accolades of its various students.

All in all, the ceremony acknowledged the 21 awards garnered by the students, while bestowing the title of Best Sportsman and Best Sportswoman to two outstanding students.

First City UC Director Tan Sri Dato’ (Dr.) Teo Chiang Liang commended the students’ ability to strike a balance between academic excellence and extracurricular activities. This holistic educational approach prepares students to be dynamic and bold in facing challenges in their workplace.

Among these students of excellence were Faculty of Business, Hospitality & Communication (FBHC) students Edmond Yap Kam-Yuan, Ryan Chin Kit Hoe, Ong Zhi Ee and Alaa Adil Ahmed Elbaz.

They emerged as Co-National Champions in the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Society Malaysia Ethics Challenge 2019. Their scintillating presentation on business solutions to selected Ethics and Finance case studies gave them the edge over other competitors from top Malaysian universities.

Furthermore, they took their success one step higher by clinching the Third Place in the CFA Society Singapore University Ethics Challenge 2019 Regional Finals.

Two other students who proudly carried the First City name on the international stage were Faculty of Design & Built Environment (FDBE) students Loh Qiau Yu and Lim Hong Cheng. Both of them participated in the prestigious ASPaC (Asia Student Package Design Competition) 2019, going up against the top designers in Asia.

Lim’s intriguing Malaya Tiger candy dispenser entry bagged him the Honourable Award.

Meanwhile Loh’s Clayn design bagged her the Japan Foundation Award. She further distinguished herself and First City UC by becoming the sole Asian participate to clinch a top 3 achievement in the inaugural OLYMPAC competition.

Another group of design students who were rightfully honoured at the ceremony was Team Vanguard Design. The team comprised graduating Interior Architecture and Design Degree students Preston Tew Yong Siang, Yong Sing Luan, Soh Zu Xin, Phang Li Wen, Loo Pei Ling and Chang Qi Heng.

They, along with competing teams from Malaysia’s leading universities were invited by Salon Films (H.K) Ltd. to propose their own concept for a 20-storey office building located at Kuala Lumpur.

Team Vanguard Design’s proposal which included amenities such as a Theater, Production Studio, Café, Exhibition Hall, Film Museum and even a Co-Working Space managed wowed the judges. This resulted in the team being awarded the Grand Prize which also netted them USD $10,000!

On the other hand, First City UC’s Engineering and Computing students proved their problem solving skills once more with their stellar performance at the E-Genting Bug Hunt Competition 2019. Notably, Computing student Choo Han Yang was able to impress judges with his solutions, ultimately netting him the Second Prize.

First City also demonstrated its commitment to achieving sports excellence as evidenced by the students selected as “Best Sportsman” and “Best Sportswoman”. Despite only being Foundation students, both Hoo Sai Yuen (Best Sportsman) and Jacqielynn Saw Sze Wye (Best Sportswoman) have already collected a slew of medals from a number of Tawkewando Invitational Tournaments.

For over the past 30 years, First City University College has continued to provide consistent academic success, while featuring a robust extracurricular scene. As part of the campus life, students are encouraged to actively participate in the various sports and recreational clubs.
