FIRST CITY CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL STUDENT POPULATION WITH CULTURAL EVENT
First City University College celebrated its diverse international student population by organising the extravagant International Night 2019 event at the First City Hall.
As an institution that offers world-class and industry-relevant study programmes, First City UC has attracted international students from around 27 different countries, which include China, Korea, Japan, The Philippines, Brunei, Indonesia as well as Central Asia and Africa.
This year’s event was graced by VIPs and dignitaries led by First City UC Governor and Director Tan Sri Dato’ (Dr) Teo Chiang Liang and his wife Puan Sri Luan Teo. Other participants included delegates from overseas embassies and other community bodies.
For this year, a dove motif was used to signify the peaceful and vibrant campus life of First City UC diverse community.
Meanwhile, First City Hall was decked in maroon coloured decorations in keeping with First City UC’s crest and student bodies’ logos.
Some of the highlights of International Night included cultural performances representing different countries such as Congo, Sudan and China and a lucky draw session. Prizes were also awarded to the “Best Dressed Man” and “Best Dressed Woman” present at the event.
Student Council President Kenneth Bedhan Ndungu, who is also a BA (Hons) Hospitality Management from Kenya, explained that the aim of the biannual event was to share the different cultures of the international student community with the community in Bandar Utama.
“As an international student, I believe there are many windows of opportunities to
interact with people of different cultures and creeds,” Kenneth explained.
“As the organising committee, we were under immense pressure to make this year’s edition was a success. Having attended the previous editions in 2015 and 2017, I told myself and the organising committee that we had to push ourselves to ensure that our event was on par with other universities”, Kenneth shared.
He added that the committee was able to accomplish its goal as everyone had something to bring to the table. Be it contributing ideas or securing sponsors, everyone carried out their responsibilities.
Along the way, the committee was fortunate to have secured the assistance of First City UC’s Hospitality Club to provide food and drinks. The club members comprised students of the Hospitality and Tourism Management programme, who are trained to prepare hotel calibre refreshments for guests.
First City UC Governor and Director Tan Sri Dato’ (Dr) Teo Chiang Liang commended the committee’s efforts in coordinating the challenging logistics for International Night 2019.
I believe that this event can help highlight to these embassies’ delegates that First City UC has a thriving and diverse community of international students. Hopefully, this will in turn lead to an increase of international student enrolment at First City UC. Despite hailing from different continents as far as Africa and Europe, we want them to feel right at home here in Malaysia”, Teo shared.
At First City UC, students are exposed to a robust extra-curricular scene, with many sports and student clubs to choose from.
Academic wise, the university college enjoys a proven track record of producing highly employable graduates over the last 30 years, which can be attributed to its industry-relevant and Malaysian Qualification Agency-accredited curricula.
The university college is located within the modern township of Bandar Utama in Petaling Jaya, Selangor. The eco-friendly urban campus is easily accessible via MRT as well as other forms of public transportations.
