PETALING JAYA, 22^nd February, 2019– First City University College holds a prominent presence in the education industry, offering a vast field of study in Engineering and Computing, Business, Hospitality, Tourism Management, Communication Studies, Interior Architecture and Design.

The Faculty of Engineering and Computing strives to keep up with the industry’s progressive outlook on I.R 4.0 and the emergence of I.R 5.0 with its holistic Foundation, Diploma, Degree and Post-graduate programmes.

Placing emphasis on graduate employability, the Faculty has taken substantial measures to strengthen its links with respective industry partners and players in the best interest of the students. This provides them with an extra edge, having acquired both life and soft skills in communication, presentation and leadership. Thus, it is not surprising that the University College has produced thousands of employable engineers and successful entrepreneurs within the 29 remarkable years since its inception.

The Faculty recently signed an Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Xtrategize Technologies Sdn Bhd and ICONIX. First City University College is committed to enhance graduate’s employability through Xtrategize Technologies Gradu8: EMPOWERS experiential training programme that is specially crafted for engineering students.

Meanwhile, the agreement signed with ICONIX aims to explore the development of the Arm Internet of Things (IoT) technology. Arm, is a product by ICONIX made to rapidly advance IoT technologies through the design and development of the integral platforms, sensors, and subsystems that drive IoT performance. The Faculty strives to foster its adoption among students and lecturers via Industrial Design Projects (IDP) and/or Final Year Projects (FYP).

The technology will be integrated into the course syllabus, which will also be utilized to promote students’ research projects. Through Arm IoT Connected Community, students will benefit from the industry exposure and the internship opportunities with various industry-attachment programs.

Caleb Lim Lee Wu, a graduate in the BEng (Hons) Electrical and Electronic Engineering programme from the recent 2018 graduation was impressively offered the position of an electrical and electronic engineer during his internship by a leading company in the semi-conductor industry. Caleb had not even entered his last semester when he was entrusted by his present employer to take up the position.

“I went for my industrial training which took three months, and I was offered employment even before my training period ended. My company was willing to wait until I officially graduated before I commenced working”, Caleb shared.

Placed at the top of the list in “10 of Malaysia’s Most In-Demand Jobs for 2018”, published on EduAdvisor website, the engineering field shows a high demand by employers. As stated in the article, Malaysia requires a staggering 200,000 engineers by 2020. However, as of 2017, there are only 70,000 registered engineers in the country. This gives room for at least 130,000 graduates to secure jobs in engineering.

Students with visions to follow in the footsteps of the University College’s graduates in securing engineering positions may take the first step in tertiary education by enrolling into the Foundation in Engineering, Science and Technology programme. The 1-year programme prepares students for two major degree pathways offered by the Faculty, which are Engineering and Computing. Students will be equipped with all the necessary knowledge on the respective pathways upon completion of the Foundation programme.

Graduates from the Foundation programme have the liberty to choose their next step in tertiary education from a wide range of degree programmes offered at the Faculty, from Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, to Information Systems – all specially crafted to cater to the fast evolving and challenging industry.

The strength of the Faculty comes from its core, which is from the syllabus of its programmes. Engineering and Computing programmes at the Faculty are accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA). The syllabus meets Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC) requirements and they are approved by EAC. In addition, Bachelor of Electronic Engineering with Honours and Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering with Honours programmes incorporate Integrated Design Projects that provide students with in-depth knowledge and skills on project management and significant experience in developing, designing, prototyping, proving, and verifying their designs.

In order to ensure constant quality, the programmes receive continuous feedback from Industry Advisory Panels which provide input in areas of programmes, curriculum and training to the students, which aims to nurture and induce professionalism in them. The Panels will also provide feedback on industry-related developments, demands, directions, and inspirational talks on the engineering profession.

The Faculty often holds exhibitions such as the annual Innovation Day, which is a great platform for engineering students to showcase their final year project models and prototypes. In many instances, this exhibition attracts the interest of industry leaders, and students are often offered employment on-the-spot. Mah Wey Sen Winson, who graduated with First Class Award in BEng (Hons) Electrical and Electronic Engineering, shared, “I was employed as a test-program engineer even before graduation”.

Engineering and Computing students of First City University College are also active in participating in national and state competitions. Three graduates from the Bachelor of Software Engineering (Hons) programme – Siah Kah Chun, Pang Hao Jie and Jasvina Mae  – emerged winners in 2018 E-Genting Bug Hunt Competition. They successfully brought back two Distinction awards and a Merit award.

Yap Yi Xien, a graduate from the BEng (Hons) Electrical and Electronic Engineering programme recently won first runner-up in the Telecommunication track at 2018 IEEE Malaysia Best Final Year Project Competition. The national level competition is open to all final year project students, which in its 2018 edition saw 350 project submissions across 13 tracks from students all over Malaysia.

A total of four new engineering laboratories have been set up recently at the Faculty, namely Materials and Advanced Manufacturing Laboratory, Mechanics Laboratory, Fluid Mechanics Laboratory and Thermodynamics Laboratory. On top of that, new engineering machineries and equipment have been purchased to enhance the two Mechanical Engineering Workshops, in line with the University College’s stance of providing state-of-the-art and industry-relevant learning and teaching facilities.

Other facilities include engineering and computing labs, a 3D Printer, a PCB plotter, a pneumatic workbench, an Electrical Machine Power Manipulation lab, a CNC Machine, Macintosh for Multimedia Development and Mentor Graphics Software for Integrated Circuit Design, on top of a wide range of sports and recreational facilities.
