FIRST CITY UNIVERSITY COLLEGE HOSTED THE 11TH KOREAN SPEECH CONTEST
First City University College organised its first Korean Speech Contest in collaboration with the Embassy of the Republic of Korea at the campus on 26 Nov 2016. A total of 28 contestants demonstrated their speech proficiency skills in front of about 200 attendees. The event was graced by the presence of the Minister Counsellor & Consul General, Embassy of the Republic of Korea, Mr Jeong Hong-Geun, First City Corporation Director, Tan Sri Dato’ Dr. Teo Chiang Liang, First City UC’s top management executives who include its Vice-Chancellor, Academician Professor Dr. Ho Chee Cheong and Chief Operating Officer, Ms. Yeong Yin Cheng, event organizing committee Chairperson, Mr. Seo Kyu Won, and representatives of the various Korean companies, organisations and universities sponsors.
The annual contest, which entered the 11th year of its organisation this year, is designed to encourage Korean language learners to enhance their understanding of the Korean language and to promote South Korea. The contestants, who comprise both Malaysians and non-Malaysian living in Malaysia who can speak Korean language were evaluated and divided into three categories – Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced. Each contestant was given 3 minutes to deliver a speech on a chosen theme out of two options, “Images of Korean Culture” or “Taste of Korea”. A total of 6 judges were tasked to assess the contestants’ speech skills. They represented prominent Korean organisations in Malaysia which are Ewha Womans University, Embassy of the Republic of Korea, Korean Society in Malaysia, Korea Tourism Organization, Korean School of Malaysia and Alumni Graduan Institusi Korea (AGIKO).
Winners compete for the ultimate Grand Prize, which is a scholarship to pursue Korean language at a higher level in Korean universities.
By 2017, First City UC under its Centre for Language and Extension Service will commence its own Intensive Korean language programme, in addition to the current Intensive English and German being offered. Furthermore, the university college will be rolling out more home-grown programmes to meet the demand and needs of both local and international students, such as Bachelor of Software Engineering, Bachelor of Electronic Engineering with Honours, Bachelor of Computer Science (Intelligent System) (Hons), Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Business Management, Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Marketing, Bachelor of Science (Hons) Accounting and Finance, Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Mass Communication, Master of Business Administration and Bachelor of Information Systems (Hons) in Business Management.
To find out more about other programmes being offered at First City UC, interested parties are invited to visit during its December Open Day on 17th and 18th of December 2016 from 10.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. Counsellors are available to attend to queries on extended counselling hours from 8.30 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. on weekdays and 10.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. on weekends) from 1st December 2016 until 15th January 2017 (excluding public holidays).
