FIRST CITY UNIVERSITY COLLEGE STUDENTS WON OVER 70 AWARDS WITHIN ONE YEAR
63 award-winning students of First City University College (First City UC) were celebrated in an official awards presentation ceremony today. The annual event was held in recognition of the students’ talent, perseverance and achievement in various academic and non-academic competitions throughout 2016.
The ceremony, the first held after the institution achieved the University College status in 2015, was graced by the presence of the institution’s top management executives including Academician Professor Dr. Ho Chee Cheong, its Vice-Chancellor, Ms.Yeong Yin Cheng, its Chief Operating Officer, academic staff and students.
Students of First City UC have consistently been making the institution proud of their achievements in many highly competitive contests at both national and international levels. In 2015 and 2016, these 63 students won a total of 72 awards. At the top of the list, Ooi Lie Kee won the Best 10 for Students Category for his final year project titled “Urban Shelter for the Homeless”, in Asia Pacific Interior Design Awards (APIDA) 2015 last October. The awards is an international competition organized by Hong Kong Interior Design Association, and is a highly coveted competition open for interior design students all over Asia with winning submissions from Malaysia, Taiwan, Japan and Hong Kong.
First City UC students retain top places in sports events when Edmond Yap Kam Yuan, a Foundation of Engineering, Science & Technology student managed to bag Gold and Silver medals during the Taekwondo International Open Brighton, UK held in July, whilst in April, Choy Thir Soon won three medals in the 2016 National Kungfu Martial Arts competition “Brem Cup” held in Malaysia.
Additionally, a group of students who worked on a community service project titled “Big Farm & Mini Library” won RM4,000 grant from Khind Starfish Foundation under its “Projects of Happiness” initiative.
First City UC encourages and motivates its students to achieve excellence in their academic studies as well as in their extra-curricular activities. During the recent graduation ceremonies, a total of 50 students emerged as recipients of the Excellence Awards for achieving first class honours in their respective degree programmes.
First City UC students have a track record of being highly employable and often headhunted for rewarding careers in management capacities in diverse fields ranging from Engineering, Computing, Graphic Design, and Interior Architecture & Design, all within a short time after completing their studies and in many instances, immediately upon graduation.
In line with its aspiration to provide the highest standard of tertiary education and to cope with its expanding student population, First City UC is increasing its facilities with the new Phase II building ready in 2017. The new 350,000 square feet campus block houses lecture rooms, studios, seminar rooms, workshops, state-of-the-art laboratories, IT Centre, library and MBA Centre. To ensure students are provided with the highest standard of quality facilities and support in terms of convenience, the expansion includes on-campus student accommodation with air-conditioned en suite rooms.
