PACKAGING DESIGN DOES MATTER 2016

FIRST CITY UC CELEBRATES 10-YEAR COLLABORATION WITH GS1 MALAYSIA

First City University College (First City UC) is reinforcing its long-term partnership with GS1 Malaysia as they entered into the 10th year of their annual collaboration in the packaging design project, titled “Packaging Design Does Matter 2016”. The aim of the project is “Innovate & Improve Your Packaging”. The project was jointly organized by the Faculty of Design & Built Environment and ran from 25th until 29th April 2016 at the campus in Bandar Utama, Petaling Jaya.

GS1 is the largest organization that sets global supply chain standards, which manages and implements the global system of supply chain standards in Malaysia to increase business efficiency and global-market competitiveness of our business community. Every year for the last ten years First City UC has been collaborating with GS1 Malaysia to engage their Graphic Design students to work hand-in-hand in providing innovative product packaging design for SME’s who are subscribers of GS1 Malaysia.

“This project is intended to provide innovative packaging design of products from GS1 subscribers and at the same time expose our final-year students of BA (Hons) Graphic Design to the fine elements of industrial packaging design and firsthand learning experience of the demands of the corporate world. We are very excited in the opportunity given by GS1 Malaysia to jointly organize the project and to look forward to witnessing the outcome of this year’s project artworks, marking the 10th year of collaboration with GS1 Malaysia,” said the Deputy Head of Graphic Design, Dr. Debbie Gan. She added that a total of 19 students and eight participating companies took part in this year’s project.

First City UC’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Ho Chee Cheong stresses the importance of the industry collaboration, saying, “We are confident that this collaboration with GS1 Malaysia will grow from strength to strength, as we continue to create opportunities for our students to directly interact with the relevant industries. This way, our students are attuned to the expectations of the industry.”

On the last day of the project, the students proudly presented their final design to the representatives of the companies, members of the faculty and the management of the institution. Diyana Dakhiyar from Figure Fit (M) Sdn. Bhd., impressed by the packaging design presented by the group of students assigned to work with her, said, “I am happy with the improved design for our product designed by these young students. They are able to understand my brief of wanting a total rebranding of the product with fresh design, and worked well together as a group to deliver a design outcome that I am satisfied with.”

Apart from the Graphic Design programme, First City UC also offers bachelor’s degree programmes in Interior Architecture & Design and Furniture & Product Design in collaboration with Nottingham Trent University, UK, in addition to Foundation in Art & Design and Diplomas in Interactive Design and Interior Design.

First City UC will be  rolling out more home-grown programmes in 2017 to meet the demand and needs of both local and international students, such as BA (Hons) in Fashion Marketing and Branding and Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Graphic Design, Interior Architecture and Design and Furniture & Product Design.
