CELEBRATING THE PRIDE AND JOY OF FIRST CITY UNIVERSITY COLLEGE
PETALING JAYA, 8th November, 2018 – First City University College celebrated the illustrious achievements of its students in various competitions at state, national and international level at its annual Awards Ceremony, held on the 8th of November. The institution, which has an enviable track record of almost three decades of producing award-winning, industry-ready and highly sought-after graduates, recounted the accolades that its students garnered in 2017 and 2018 in academic and sports.
The Awards Ceremony was well-attended by the top management of First City University College, namely its Director, Tan Sri Dato (Dr) Teo Chiang Liang, Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr. Mak Chai, Chief Operating Officer, Ms. Yeong Yin Cheng, staff, alumni, and award recipients.
Professor Dr. Mak Chai, in his welcome address stated, “Since its establishment, First City University College is committed to maintain high quality education with a balance of both academic excellence and dynamic extra-curricular experience.” He added that students of First City University College are the institution’s pride-and joy as they have never failed to bring back medals and trophies from various state championships, national contests, and international competitions each year.
Academic awards presented at this year’s Awards Ceremony include an AUSMAT Academic award and awards in art and design and, engineering and computing. Meanwhile, the sports awards include students’ achievements in taekwondo and badminton tournaments.
Ong Sze Xian, an alumna from the BA (Hons) Furniture and Product Design programme, with her multi-purpose sofa called “Hygge” won first place at the 2018 ASEAN Furniture Design
Contest, which made her the country’s sole representative to the ASEAN round held in Bangkok, Thailand.
Four alumni from Faculty of Engineering and Computing; Siah Kah Chun, Jasvina Mae Ealn Davan, Joseph Ong Wai Kah and Pang Hao Jie participated in eGenting Bug Hunt Competition 2017: Open-book Hand-written Testing Procedure Design Competition and won two Distinction awards, first prize and third prize respectively.
The highlight of the Awards Ceremony was the crowning of the Best Sportsman and Best Sportswoman of the year 2018 to Steven Tan Kok Haw and Celine Tan Jia Jie, who were both outstanding Taekwondo athletes. Steven won four gold medals, one silver medal and four bronze medals in intervarsity and open tournaments; while Celine won one bronze medal and two gold medals in open tournaments.
