BUILDING CONFIDENCE TO KICK OFF A SUCCESSFUL CAREER

At First City University College, we equip students with comprehensive industrial knowledge together with practical and life-long skills much needed to help them get employed in the challenging job market once they graduate. This is in line with our mission and goal to provide quality education at affordable fees to ensure our graduates are well sought after by industries or able to successfully venture into entrepreneurship.

One of the ways gear them up to seamlessly assimilate into the job market is by organising career fairs, one of which was held recently. The fair provided opportunities for students to meet potential employers from various industries including automotive, design, education, financial services, hospitality, information technology, manufacturing, publishing and recruitment consultancy who are there to recruit. Apart from the interview sessions, students and future graduates of First City UC attended soft-skills clinics and participated in workshop sessions designed by highly-experienced trainers and speakers to build confidence in these future working adults.

These workshops – Resume Writing, LinkedIn Profile Development, Interview Skills and Resume Clinic – ensure students were enlightened to the latest trends in employment and what they need to prepare themselves for upcoming job interviews. These were also Alumni Career Sharing sessions where past graduates of First City UC who are now successful entrepreneurs were invited to give talks about their experiences and provide motivational anecdotes to students.

When students enrol with First City UC, they will be exposed to activities such as these, which are regularly organised to hone their skills and prepare them to join the workforce after graduation. They become a part of a vibrant, multi-cultural community with a healthy mix of local and international peers. With the various clubs and events which require students’ active participation, we are providing opportunities for students to sharpen various soft skills which have become increasingly important as many employers are now looking beyond academic achievements. Recognising the importance of producing all-rounded graduates to enhance their employability, we constantly work with collaborative partners in relevant industries on the latest learning technologies and internship placements, while designing specially-crafted courses which would equip students with necessary skills relevant to the industry for immediate employment.

New facilities at Phase II campus expansion

With increasing student population, we work towards fulfilling our mission to provide the best teaching and learning facilities, we embarked on a Phase II campus expansion. The new 350,000 square feet new building – almost twice the size of and located adjacently to the current premise  – houses additional lecture rooms, studios, seminar rooms, workshops, state-of-the-art laboratories, an IT Centre, a library and a MBA Centre. Faculty of Design and Built Environment moved to its new home in the academic block which features the White Canvas Gallery to showcase its students’ projects and portfolios. The other two faculties – Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences and Faculty of Engineering & Computing operate in the existing premise. The Creative Stove, a shop where Design students’ handmade products and artworks are put on sale also found their new home in the new environment.

To ensure students are provided with the highest standard of quality facilities and support in terms of convenience, the expansion project includes on-campus student accommodation with air-conditioned en suite rooms. Students can truly enjoy a holistic educational and living experience by taking advantage of the indoor sports and recreational facilities such as futsal, badminton and basketball courts, along with the airy and spacious lifestyle-themed cafeteria and a comfortable student lounge.

Strategically located in Bandar Utama, which is Petaling Jaya’s urban towncentre surrounded by commercial and residential areas, First City UC students can lead a wholesome lifestyle with connectivity via the MRT system, surrounded by entertainment centres, food and beverage outlets, and commercial areas with complete amenities. All these facilities which are available at their doorstep combined with quality education ensure students are well-provided for, which in turn will allow them to focus on pursuing their academic goals.
