EXPLORING BATIK CRAFTSMANSHIP – A GUIDE TO BATIK CANTING PROCESS
A study trip to the National Craft Institute’s Creative Craft Studio Batik Workshop was organized jointly by the team from BA (Hons) in Fashion Marketing Programme [BFM] and the National Craft Institute on 6 February 2024. The excursion involved BFM Year 2 and Year 3 students accompanied by three faculty members, namely, Programme Coordinator Sharifah Mazwari, and lecturers Nazima Abdullah and Hosny Hassim.
The primary objectives of the trip were to gain a comprehensive understanding of the batik canting production technique and to learn effective cost management strategies for batik-based products.
Students were guided through the entire process, from an introduction to materials and equipment to drawing patterns on fabric, applying traced patterns with canting, colouring, drying, and finishing techniques. The workshop aimed to equip students with hands-on experience and insights into the intricate processes involved in batik production.
The expected outcomes of the study trip include identifying textile production and finishing methods relevant to the fashion industry and applying these techniques to create marketable products.
Overall, the trip provided a valuable learning opportunity for students to enhance their practical skills, industry knowledge, and cost-effective production strategies in the field of batik craft.
