FIRST CITY UC: COMMITTED TO PRODUCING HIGHLY EMPLOYABLE, INDUSTRY-READY GRADUATES

For students who just received their SPM results last March, the most common question being asked will be whether to pursue a pre-university Foundation programme or to obtain a Diploma. While both of these programmes offer pathways to a university degree, many students opt to pursue a Diploma course as it provides them with advance knowledge and practical skills which can be their ticket to an entry-level position to secure a job, or as a smoother transition into continued study at degree level.

First City University College offers Foundation, Diploma, Degree and Postgraduate programmes to cater to the needs of both students and the relevant industries. Since part of its mission is to make education accessible to all, First City UC offers these programmes at affordable fees without compromising on quality.  Its teaching and learning capabilities are undisputed as it has consistently been producing award-winning and highly sought-after graduates in the fields of Design, Built Environment, Engineering, Computing, Business, Mass Communication, Hospitality and Tourism Management throughout its 26 years’ history.

To ensure students are provided with the best education experience, First City UC works closely with industry partners and reputable organisations which includes participation in exhibitions, seminars, conferences, talks, field trips and competitions. These collaborations allow its students to explore and work on ‘live’ projects to gain real working experience within an organisation’s setup. Additionally, First City UC collaborates with international universities and institutions to enhance the quality of its programmes. For example: its collaboration with Hotel & Tourism Management Institute, Switzerland (HTMi) for its Hospitality and Tourism Management diploma. Students pursuing this programme will receive dual diplomas – one from each institution upon graduation and will be accepted for entry into the final year of International Hotel and Events Management degree at Switzerland.

For all other diploma programmes, students possess an advanced standing once they graduate to continue to Year 2 of a related degree programme of their choice within the three major faculties at First City UC: Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences, Faculty of Design & Built Environment and Faculty of Engineering & Computing. The dedicated teaching staff of these faculties possess extensive industry experience and teaching skills, and are equipped with the latest in teaching and learning tools to provide the very best of quality education. Students’ skills and knowledge are sharpened, while their soft-skills including communication, organisation and problem-solving are enhanced to meet the demands of the industry – which require not just students who excel academically, but also well-rounded, holistic graduates.

Students’ achievements are very important to First City UC; therefore their projects and portfolios are put on display in public exhibitions such as the annual Diploma Showcase and Innovation Day. During these events, students demonstrate their projects, interact with visitors, receive encouragements to be confident and talented designers, programmers and engineers and engage with potential employers, who often attend to seek out and recruit First City UC’s award-winning students. In many instances, students are offered employment on the spot by industry leaders. All these steps taken by the institution ensure that students will emerge successful and excellent in their respective fields.

Students’ projects and portfolios are on public display in the annual Diploma Showcases.
