First City University College celebrated its inaugural ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) Day, focusing on sustainability and governance on 31 July 2024. The event brought together students, faculty members, and industry experts to explore ESG principles.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Saw Sor Heoh opened the event, emphasizing the integration of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and ESG principles into the curriculum. “ESG Day is a major step in preparing our students for the evolving global industry. Incorporating ESG principles ensures our graduates are academically prepared and socially responsible,” she stated.

The event featured a panel forum with ESG experts like Ms. Mimi Loo from Adevo Design & Build, Mr. Hafiz Zainuddin from Knight Frank Malaysia, Ms. Fiona Lam from Silnergy Marketing, and Mr. Shazlee Musa from Q3 Management Solutions. Mr. Zainuddin remarked, “Educating younger generations about ESG is essential for creating a better world.”

The day also included booths showcasing academic and industry projects. Sixteen academic booths presented ESG initiatives, such as community projects and recycled paper making, while 21 vendor booths offered solutions in cloud services and biodegradable cleaning.

Ms. Mimi Loo led a workshop where students created mind maps on the United Nations’ 17 SDGs. Wong Shan Kang and his team from the Diploma in Information Technology won RM300, sponsored by BNI Kinetic, for their effort. “This highlights a global issue. We hope it raises awareness about protecting our environment,” said Wong.

Mr. Weladavi Rahula, Head of Student Services, said, “We are thrilled to have hosted our first ESG Day, highlighting our commitment to advancing sustainability through education and collaboration.”
