FIRST CITY UNIVERSITY COLLEGE SPURS CAREER POSSIBILITIES WITH I.R 4.0
First City University College’s Faculty of Engineering & Computing (FEC) educated prospective students and parents on the impact of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (I.R 4.0) via its recent weekend online event, Technovation 2020.
The livestream which was broadcasted on Facebook, received close to 2,000 views with many positive feedback and queries. These in turn contributed to an encouraging response towards the upcoming October intake.
Under the theme, Maximising career prospects with I.R 4.0, the faculty organised Technovation 2020 with the aim to promote awareness on how I. R4.0 has been transforming various industries across the world.
To this end, FEC invited many of its alumni and current students to provide a first-hand account of how I.R 4.0 has impacted their lives. Among the invited speakers was a representative from First City UC’s international partner, Teesside University in the United Kingdom.
Alumnus and current Smuzcity Berhad Executive Chairman Mr. Kent Lee shared the technological innovations utilised by his company. His presentation video demonstrated how China’s largest online retailer, JD Logistics benefitted from Smuzcity’s top-notch Internet of Things (IoT) related solution services. In particular, its JDX Presto concept store is currently the largest cashless store in the ASEAN region.
Another highlight was when Teesside University Representative Dr. Gordon Marshall presented a session titled Does AI and Cybersecurity Mean the End of the World? The School of Computing Associate Dean explained that unlike how Artificial Intelligence was portrayed negatively in popular culture, this technology along with Machine Learning could advance areas such as Marketing, Banking and Healthcare.
Graduating Bachelor of Information Systems in Business Management student Ms. Siti Ain Nawwarah shared that mastering I.R 4.0 related topics such as Data Mining, Data Cleaning as well Data Prediction and Forecasting has prepared her for the challenges in her career.
On the other hand, Bachelor of Computer Science (Intelligent Systems) student Mr. Chan Che Wei credited the programmes’ effective syllabus for enabling him to learn six different computer languages despite not having any prior knowledge.
Meanwhile, FEC Dean Assoc. Prof. Dr. Christine Lee further encouraged students to invest in Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics related study programmes, due to the positive job growth generated by I.R 4.0, having cited the extremely high demand for Software Developers as an example.
“By 2025, we will be able to observe more tangible effects of I.R 4.0 in our daily lives. Imagine more than 50% of our home appliances being connected to the internet or driverless cars being introduced on the roads!” exclaimed Dr. Christine Lee.
