FOSTERING COMPASSION – A DAY OF VOLUNTEERING AT THE SECOND CHANCE ANIMAL SOCIETY
On 20 July 2024, six students, accompanied by their module leader, Dr. Ahmad Faris Naqiyuddin, visited the Second Chance Animal Society, an organisation dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and finding homes for abandoned and abused animals. The initiative aimed to enhance teamwork, collaboration, and compassion through volunteer efforts, supporting Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 15 – Life on Land.
The students contributed to animal care by assisting with grooming tasks such as bathing and brushing, cleaning the shelter, and feeding both dogs and cats. Fundraising was also a crucial part of their project, as they collaborated to create arts and crafts to raise funds. These funds supported the Second Chance Animal Society’s ongoing efforts in providing veterinary care, vaccinations, spaying/neutering, and adoption services. Additionally, they donated RM400 worth of dog food to the shelter.
Yew Jing Wei shared, “Volunteering at the animal shelter was a heartwarming experience. Rehoming abandoned dogs and cats is not easy, and I deeply respect the hard work and passion of those dedicated to reducing stray populations.” Vanness Tey Zhe Kai remarked, “Far from the city, down a rugged road, I found heroes quietly working at the animal shelter, giving countless animals a chance at love and a home.”
By the end of the day, the students reflected on their volunteer experience with gratitude and a sense of fulfilment.
