GRAPHIC DESIGN STUDENTS DIVE INTO ILLUSTRATION WITH NELSON LIP

On 17 July 2024, the Faculty of Design & Built Environment welcomed renowned Malaysian illustrator Nelson Lip for a captivating session titled “My Illustration Journey.” The event brought together students from three programmes; BA (Honours) in Graphic Design, Diploma in Graphic Design and Foundation in Art & Design.

Nelson Lip, a freelance illustrator from Tawau, Sabah, shared his rich experience and artistic journey, drawing inspiration from the lush forests of Sabah. His work includes collaborations with prominent organizations such as UNICEF Malaysia, World Vision Malaysia, Doctors Without Borders (MSF), Harvard School of Public Health, and The Wizarding World. The session provided students with insights into his illustration style, storytelling techniques, and intriguing experiences with international clients.

The presentation was particularly engaging as Nelson Lip conducted a live demonstration, showcasing his illustration techniques and skills. Teng Jin Hoong, a BA (Honours) in Graphic Design student, remarked, “After Nelson’s sharing session, I found it fascinating and intriguing to see how his illustrations are drawn and presented.” Wong Jee Teng, also a BA (Honours) in Graphic Design student, added, “Nelson’s journey as a children’s book illustrator is highly motivating. He inspired me to paint my life with my own colours.”

The event was an enriching experience for the students, offering them valuable perspectives and inspiration from a seasoned professional in the field of illustration.
