MENTAL WELLNESS EVENT 2023: A MILESTONE IN CAMPUS MENTAL HEALTH
MENTAL WELLNESS EVENT 2023: A MILESTONE IN CAMPUS MENTAL HEALTH
To commemorate World Mental Health Day, observed worldwide on 10th October, our Student Services Department collaborated with Tongle to organize the Mental Wellness Event, which took place on 25 October 2023.
Tongle is an internationally recognised pioneering force, committed to improving the mental well-being of youth in Malaysia and beyond.
The Mental Wellness Event, opened by our Deputy Vice-Chancellor Dr Hing Hiang Lian together with the Head of Student Services Weladavi Rahula and the Dean of Faculty of Business, Hospitality & Communication Associate Prof Dr Lewis Leong, left a lasting impact on the students and staff who attended.
The event provided an invaluable service by offering mental health screening tests, and what also set this event apart was the provision of immediate counselling services, with several licensed and registered counsellors on standby to assist students and staff.
Tongle went a step further by offering one-to-one counselling sessions at affordable rates, benefiting both students and staff. The introduction of a game booth to educate participants on recognizing symptoms of depression demonstrated a creative and engaging approach to mental health awareness.
Another key highlight of the event was the Listener Training Workshop, conducted by Tongle’s registered and licensed mental health Counsellor Kristy Choy. The workshop was a fantastic opportunity to cultivate the essential skill of active listening that is needed to assist individuals in times of distress.
In summary, the Mental Wellness Event successfully raised awareness about mental health, offered valuable screening tests, and provided immediate counselling support to those in need. It demonstrated a commitment to the mental wellness of the campus community and left a positive impact on all participants.
