NATIONAL TAEKWON-DO CHAMPIONSHIP 2016 AT FIRST CITY UNIVERSITY COLLEGE

First City UC hosted the annual National Taekwon-do Championship for the second time at their premises from 17 to 18 December 2016, organised in collaboration with International Taekwon-do Federation Malaysia and its Selangor associate. The tournament, open only for ITF Taekwon-do associates and affiliates, provided an avenue where they can send their best students to compete and demonstrate various skills in the sport.

The opening ceremony was graced by Menteri Besar of Selangor, Y.A.B. Dato’ Seri Haji Mohamed Azmin bin Ali, First City Corporation Director, Tan Sri Dato’ Dr. Teo Chiang Liang, President of Taekwon-do Association of Selangor, PU Ustaz Haji Muhammad Hafiz bin Haneefa, First City UC’s top management executives who include its Vice-Chancellor, Academician Professor Dr. Ho Chee Cheong and Chief Operating Officer, Ms. Yeong Yin Cheng, International Taekwon-do Federation Malaysia’s representatives Grandmaster Tan Chek Si and Master Dr. Azwan Khoo bin Abdullah, event Organizing Chairman, Dr. David Khoo Han Siang and over 300 contestants, guests, supporters and crews.

The art of Taekwon-Do has been mushrooming since the inception of ITF Taekwon-Do in 22nd March 1966, which is sanctioned by Pesuruhjaya Sukan Malaysia & Ministry of Education to promote the art of self-defence and as part of school’s co-curriculum activity. ITF Malaysia (ITFM) has been actively promoting the art of ITF Taekwon-Do through many districts, states and national level competitions on annual basis. Many dedicated and outstanding students actively prepare to participate in the events; this further encourages them to work and train harder because their participation will earn them higher co-curriculum marks.

ITF Taekwon-Do strives to promote and encourage selected participants to compete in the international championship; with their exposure, the participants may be able to bring back some experience and skills to share with their peers. Most importantly, ITF Taekwon-Do is affiliated to International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF) based in Vienna.

Besides imparting knowledge to its students and encouraging them to learn, First City UC strongly supports them in their extra-curricular activities such as sports, music and the arts. To honour its commitment in producing well-rounded graduates who do not just excel at academics, the institution awards scholarships to qualified candidates of district, state and national players of various sports who meet the entry requirements and wish to pursue their studies at the university college. To ensure students are provided with the highest standard of quality facilities and support in terms of convenience, the Phase II campus expansion includes on-campus student accommodation with air-conditioned en suite rooms, and indoor sports and recreational facilities for its students to make use of and engage in their favourite sports.

On the same weekend, First City held its Open Day. January intake is in progress for a wide range of study disciplines in Business, Hospitality and Tourism Management, Mass Communication, Engineering, Computing, Design and Built Environment, Pre-University Studies and Languages. Counsellors are available to attend to queries on extended counselling hours from 8.30 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. (Weekdays) and 10.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. (Weekends) from 1st December 2016 until 21st January 2017 (excluding public holidays).

By 2017, First City UC under its Centre for Language and Extension Service will commence its own Intensive Korean language programme, in addition to the current Intensive English and German being offered. Furthermore, the university college will be  rolling out more home-grown programmes to meet the demand and needs of both local and international students, such as Bachelor of Software Engineering, Bachelor of Electronic Engineering with Honours, Bachelor of Computer Science (Intelligent System) (Hons), Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Business Management, Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Marketing, Bachelor of Science (Hons) Accounting and Finance, Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Mass Communication, Master of Business Administration and Bachelor of Information Systems (Hons) in Business Management.
