FIRST CITY UNIVERSITY COLLEGE TO SPEARHEAD BREAKTHROUGHS THROUGH RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

Poised as a leading higher learning institution, First City University College is set to make major breakthroughs through its research and development efforts. In realising this, the university college organised Research Day 2017, aimed at encouraging First City UC’s researchers to present and disseminate their works.

“Since 2005, First City UC has been conducting collaborative research with industries and we have published research papers. These research and scholarly initiatives are being intensified.  The Research Day will serve the purpose of encouraging our staff and students to acquire contemporary research knowledge, “said Associate Professor Dr Christine Lee, Head of Centre for Excellence in Research and Innovation (CERI).

She emphasised that CERI will play a pivotal role in spearheading and advancing a rigorous Research, Development and Commercialisation programme and its effective management at First City UC.

CERI, established in January 2017 was officially launched by First City Corporation Director Tan Sri Dato Teo Chiang Liang today.

“Research Day represents a unique forum to share the key research findings and discoveries. As First City UC is moving towards becoming a full-fledged premier university, R&D will eventually be one of the important functions of the university,” said Professor Dr Mak Chai, Vice-Chancellor of First City UC.

Within CERI, there are three centres; The Research Management Centre (RMC) which is headed by Ir. Dr Matthew Teow, The Postgraduate Centre which supports the Registrar Office on managing the postgraduate students’ research activity with the First City UC and the Intellectual Property and Commercialisation Centre which manages the patent and commercialization matters for all research activity within the university college.

The event was well attended by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Mak Chai, Chief Operating Officer Ms Yeong Yin Cheng and First City UC’s staff members.

Among the research papers presented during the research day were:  A minimal CNN: Understanding the convolutional feature-learning algorithm using feature maps analysis by Faculty of Engineering & Computing’s Ir Dr Matthew Teow, Creatively Transitioning the Teacher to a Teacher-Researcher by Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Dean Dr Anne Ho and Cultural Expression and Climatic Strategies with Skylights in Airport Terminals by Dr Siti Norzaini.

First City UC emphasizes in developing state-of-the-art facilities and hires academics with a strong research background to further enhance its research profile.
