STUDENTS SHINE AT CMYK*L DESIGN COMPETITION 2025

Students from First City University College made a remarkable impact at the CMYK*L Design Competition, held with the Kuala Lumpur Design Festival 2025. The exhibition ran from 17 to 25 October at DC Mall, Damansara City, celebrating “Polychromatic Frontiers”. The students were finalists for their outstanding projects, representing the Diploma in Graphic Design and BA (Hons) Fashion Marketing programmes.
Team Timeline, comprising Tan Ren Jie and Lee Jia Zhe (Richard), presented a retro-inspired project centred on REX KL. Their installation combined animation and music in a projection mapping display on the cinema building. Elia Grace Ng from the BA (Hons) Fashion Marketing programme showcased a project inspired by Pasar Besar TTDI, translating the sights, smells, and textures of the wet market into a dynamic visual narrative celebrating Malaysia’s heritage.
The Top 3 finalists were invited to the Award Gala Dinner on 25 October at the Kuala Lumpur Tourism Bureau. Industry guests visited the exhibition beforehand, giving students the opportunity to present their projects and connect with professionals. Team Timeline’s storytelling and technical execution earned them the Silver Award, marking a proud achievement for the students and the university.
Tan Ren Jie said, “Participating in CMYK*L competition was truly unforgettable. Being able to connect with designers from different places and see so many creative works made me appreciate the diversity of art.” Lee Jia Zhe added, “Sharing my work with industry professionals and receiving an award was truly meaningful.” Elia Grace Ng shared, “It was amazing to be surrounded by people who share the same love for art and culture.”
These achievements reflect First City University College’s commitment to nurturing creativity, innovation, and real-world application of design skills among its students.
to think critically, act responsibly, and contribute meaningfully to the creative economy.
