ENHANCING CIVIC ENGAGEMENT – VOTER EDUCATION PROGRAMME
On 30 July 2024, the Student Services Department and Centre for General Studies hosted the Voter Education Programme (Program Pendidikan Pengundi). Presented by the Akademi Pilihan Raya (APR) through the Suruhanjaya Pilihan Raya Malaysia (SPR), the event saw participation from 57 attendees across various centres and faculties.
The programme featured engaging sessions by guest speakers Mr. Mohd Rizuan bin Md Drus, Head of the Voter Education Programme, and Ms. Siti Naziha binti Azman, Assistant, Programme of Voter Education. They provided valuable insights into Malaysia’s electoral process, covering the system of government, the history and principles of elections, and the essential role of voting in a democratic society.
Participants took part in a hands-on simulation of the voting and vote counting process. This included role-playing as election staff and voters, which highlighted the challenges of assisting voters with disabilities and managing uncooperative individuals. The event also featured a competitive online quiz using Kahoot, where students enjoyed testing their knowledge, and the top three performers were awarded prizes.
By the end of the workshop, attendees had developed a deeper appreciation for the significance of their votes and the democratic process. The Voter Education Programme effectively equipped students with crucial knowledge and skills, fostering a heightened sense of civic responsibility and active citizenship.
