UNDERSTANDING COUNSELLING ETHICS – INSIGHTS FROM PEER COUNSELLOR PROGRAM SESSION 3

On 17 July 2024, the Student Services Department hosted the third session of the Peer Counsellor Programme, titled “Counselling Ethics and Ethical Decision Making.” Held at the Centre for Postgraduate Studies. The session which was facilitated by Teh Chia Li, a registered and licensed student counsellor, welcomed 15 students from various faculties.

The session was divided into five sections, each covering a different aspect of counselling ethics. In the first section, Ms. Chia Li introduced the Code of Ethics of Lembaga Kaunselor Malaysia (LKM), explaining its purpose in guiding counsellors to perform their duties professionally. The second section involved group activities, where participants discuss assigned topics related to LKM’s ethical codes, followed by presentations.

In the third section, Ms. Chia Li educated participants about common ethical dilemmas, such as cases involving suicide, drug addiction, and domestic abuse. She shared practical advice on handling these situations and emphasized the importance of respecting clients’ dignity and promoting their welfare. The session concluded with a group photograph to commemorate the day.

Participants left with a deeper understanding of ethical decision-making, which will benefit them in both their personal and professional lives as they navigate various interpersonal and community situations.
